Luke Combs Releases, ‘5 Leaf Clover’

The country superstar is reflecting on how this string of luck landed in his hands.

Luke Combs has shared another look into his upcoming album with the release of his new song, “5 Leaf Clover,” which fittingly dropped in correlation with the luck-ridden holiday, St Patrick’s Day.

On Friday (March 17), fans finally got to experience the full version of the new song, written by Combs with Jessi Alexander and Chase McGill. The Country superstar and reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year has been teasing the thoughtful melody of “5 Leaf Clover” on social media and live in concert for some time now. In doing so, he’s gained a tremendous amount of anticipation surrounding the release.

The new tune finds Combs stretching the bounds of his stunning vocals while pondering over all the luck he’s been experiencing lately. For him, that success is not measured by how much money he makes or the amount of fame he gains, but instead he considers himself lucky if he has “a fridge full of cold beer” and folks that “still got a bunch of good years.”

“A while back my buddy Newdy and I were looking around the clover plot at my house for 4 leaf clovers. I eventually found one, but shortly thereafter, he found a 5 leaf clover and I thought to myself, ‘Man, how lucky do you have to be to find a 5 leaf clover?’ Didn’t think too much of it at the time but wrote that down as a title in my phone,” he shared of the moment that would eventually inspire his new track.

“A few weeks later, I was writing with Jessi Alexander and Chase McGill and it came up. It still wasn’t really anything that jumped off the page to me, but I shared the idea and guitar melody I had with them and they loved it. We ended up writing the song that day,”

Combs continued.

“I eventually started playing it at shows and posting a video of the song, and y’all quickly let me know it was one I had to record; that’s why I’m super pumped for y’all to finally hear it!”

While he’s thankful for all that life has brought him, Combs humbly admits that he can’t figure out why he deserves all that he’s been given.

“I know I’m a lucky man / But I ain’t sure why I am / ‘Cause it ain’t like anyone deserves / The world in the palm of their hand,” he delivers in the chorus. “I’ve hit my knees thankful as can be / But the one thing I can’t get over / Is how’d a guy like me who’d a been fine with three / Wind up with five leaf clover?”

“5 Leaf Clover” marks the fourth song unveiled from Combs’ upcoming album, Gettin’ Old, out March 24 via River House Artists/Columbia Nashville. His fourth full-length project was produced by Combs, Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton, and will feature previously released songs, “Joe,” the leading track, “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” and “Love You Anyway.”

Reflecting on the record, Combs shared,

“This album is about the stage of life I’m in right now. One that I’m sure a lot of us are in, have been through, or will go through. It’s about coming of age, loving where life is now but at the same time missing how it used to be, continuing to fall for the one you love and loving them no matter what, living in the moment but still wondering how much time you have left, family, friends, being thankful, and leaving a legacy. Me and so many others have poured their hearts and souls into this record, and I hope you love it as much as we do.”

The “What You See Is What You Get” singer has already unveiled the track list of the upcoming release, which revealed that he co-wrote 15 of the 18 tracks. The remaining cuts were penned by songwriters including Eric Church, Travis Meadows, Johnathan Singleton, Randy Montana, Dave Turnbull, and one cover, “Fast Car,” was written solely by Tracy Chapman.
